Just north of Mendocino village on Point Cabrillo Drive, EarthSpoke Farms grows dahlias and cut flowers all summer, sells its harvest from a little wooden farm stand, and every October turns its field into a free pumpkin patch. It’s one of the farms we shop when we’re cooking this time of year.
A family farm, cultivating wonder
EarthSpoke is a small family farm. As they tell it, the family found Mendocino on a camping trip with their four daughters, fell in love with the place, and later moved here to farm, something new to all of them. “Cultivating wonder” is written on the banner that hangs over the pumpkins, and it fits.
The farm stand
The stand is a small wooden shed with crates along the walls and a cooler by the door. In mid-October it was full of the turn of the season: the last tomatoes of the year, winter squash in every shape and color, and a cooler of carrots, greens and more. It’s open seasonally, June to October, Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 4:30pm.

This is what October on the coast tastes like, and it’s why we shop stands like this one. A squash that was in the field last week, a bunch of carrots with the tops still on, the end-of-season tomatoes: that’s the start of a good fall dinner, and most of it never makes it to a supermarket shelf.

Pumpkin Wonderland, every October
Every October the field becomes Pumpkin Wonderland: pumpkins piled on hay bales, white pumpkins and dark green squash stacked under the farm’s banner, and an old pickup truck parked in the middle of it all, which is where most of the family photos happen. It’s open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, through the end of the month, and admission is free. Pumpkins and produce are priced at the stand.

Halloween weekend on the coast? It’s on our list of every Halloween event this year.

Summer: dahlias and U-pick
The rest of the year, EarthSpoke is a flower farm first. Dahlias are the headline, with U-pick flower field days in summer, DIY flower buckets and custom arrangements. If you want to grow your own, they sell dahlia tubers too. Sign up for their newsletter on the farm’s website to hear what’s blooming.
