Rehearsal dinners on the Mendocino coast
The night before is the one everybody actually remembers. It’s the only meal of the weekend where the whole party is together, nobody’s nervous yet, and there’s time to talk.
It’s also the meal that tends to get planned last. Your caterer has Saturday, and the village restaurants seat eight rather than twenty-four — by June they’re full anyway. That’s the gap we cook in.
We cook it where you’re staying
Almost every wedding party here has taken a house — a rental in Albion, a ranch above Elk, an inn booked out for the weekend. That house already has a kitchen, and we bring dinner to it.
No convoy of cars on unlit coast roads. No splitting the party across two restaurant tables. Everyone in one room, one long table, and the people who flew in finally get to meet each other.
The dinner we’re built for
A firm set up for two hundred guests runs a full crew, a truck and a kitchen to load out of, and that simply doesn’t scale down to a dinner for twenty. They have a floor, and it’s a reasonable one.
We’re built for this size, so that floor was never our problem. A rehearsal dinner is exactly the job Mendocino Chef is set up for, and the cooking we most enjoy: one room, real courses, food that arrives when it should because there are twenty plates rather than two hundred. If a larger company has your reception, we work alongside them happily — they have the Saturday, we have the Friday, and nobody’s stretched.
What it looks like
- Family-style down one long table — the format that gets strangers talking. Almost always the right call for a rehearsal.
- Or properly plated courses, if the occasion wants a little more formality.
- Built from the week’s actual sourcing — what came off the boats at Noyo, what’s out of the ground in Anderson Valley, wine from twenty minutes inland.
- We shop, cook, serve and leave the kitchen clean. The house is exactly as you found it.
- Dietary needs built into the menu rather than bolted on — which matters more at a rehearsal than anywhere, because this is the meal where the whole extended family eats together.
Good to know
How many people is this for?
Anywhere from a table of eight to around fifty. Twenty to thirty is the sweet spot and the size we see most.
Do we need a special venue?
No — and that’s rather the point. We cook in the house you’ve rented. If you haven’t booked accommodation yet, our venue guides cover which places on this coast have a kitchen worth cooking in.
What does it cost?
A rehearsal dinner is from $215 per person, with a $1,400 event minimum. It’s a dinner, and we price it as one — the wedding rate applies to the wedding. Full detail on our rates.
Can you do the welcome dinner and the morning-after brunch too?
Yes, and it’s usually the sensible way to do it. See wedding catering — we cook the dinners either side, and the wedding itself up to fifty.
