The Fensalden

A former stagecoach stop on Navarro Ridge, let whole: main house, three cottages, lawns and decks.

Navarro Ridge, Albion · about fifteen minutes south of Mendocino village, up on the ridge with the ocean below.

A former Wells Fargo stagecoach stop. The buildings go back to the 1850s and 60s — a house and a tavern — and became an inn in the 1960s. The old tavern still has the bullet holes in its ceiling, which tells you most of what you need to know about the kind of stop it was.

Today the whole property lets as one: main house, three cottages, lawns and decks, for a minimum of three days and three nights.

Kitchen reality

The kitchen in the main house was built to feed large groups, because for most of this building’s life that was its job.

That single fact puts Fensalden in a very small category. Most venues on this coast have a kitchen that was designed for a family and is now asked to serve eighty people, or no kitchen at all. This one was purpose-built to put dinner in front of a full house, and it has never stopped doing it. There is prep space and service space rather than a domestic galley with a caterer wedged into a corner.

What’s there, from the kitchen side:

  • A good-size main kitchen, plus a small back prep kitchen, so prep and service don’t fight over the same counter.
  • Two stoves, eight burners between them.
  • Three refrigerators. On this coast, that alone sets it apart.
  • Plates and serving pieces for about twenty. Above that, add plates and serving ware to the rental order; the kitchen itself has what a caterer needs.

Outside caterers cook here. As with any venue, confirm the details when you inquire.

Capacity and the shape of a stay

  • Events from 1 to 80 guests.
  • Sleeps 30+ across the main house and three cottages — the Tower House, the Seashore Cottage and the Bungalow House.
  • 11 bedrooms plus four further sleeping rooms, and 10½ bathrooms. That bathroom count matters more than people expect when thirty people are getting ready at once.
  • Three days and three nights minimum, whole property, exclusive.
  • A lawn that takes an event tent, ample parking, and dining space indoors and out.

What we would cook there

A house that sleeps thirty for three days is not one dinner, it is a week of eating, and it is the reason we price a whole wedding weekend at one rate rather than per meal. Arrival night, something generous and loud while people come up the ridge. The main event with a real kitchen behind it. Brunch on the last morning for people who need it.

It also suits the kind of cooking that only works when the kitchen is good: things finished to order, a fish course that has to go out hot, a menu with actual courses. The ocean is below you and Anderson Valley is over the hill, so the sourcing is short in both directions.

What we would not. Anything that ignores the building. It is a stagecoach inn on a ridge; food that is a bit rugged and generous suits it better than food that is fussy.

What to confirm before you book

  • Outside caterers and the extent of kitchen access — ask directly.
  • Refrigeration you can actually use across three days with thirty people also using it.
  • Where dinner for the full 80 physically happens, and the wet-weather version of that.
  • Whether tents, and which part of the lawn.
  • Noise and music end times — there are neighbors on the ridge.
  • How the three cottages allocate, if you are housing family.

Nearby

Albion sits between Little River and Elk on Highway 1. If guests are spilling out into other rentals, that is the stretch to look at — and we cook in those too. See private chef in Albion.
