Albion is where the river meets the ocean, under the last wooden trestle bridge left on Highway 1. The properties here split into two kinds: places down by the river mouth, and places up on Albion Ridge with a view over all of it. Both cook well, and they cook differently — the ridge houses tend to have the bigger kitchens and the room for a long table.

Nearly everything we do in Albion is in a private house or a rental, often up Albion Ridge Road where the bigger group properties are. These are frequently the sort of houses people take for a whole week with family, which means we’re as likely to be asked for a run of meals across a stay as for a single dinner.
Named for Britain, built on the river mouth
Albion takes its name from the old poetic word for Britain, given by an English settler who thought the coastline reminded him of home. Like its neighbors it was a lumber port, shipping timber out from the river mouth. The bridge you drive over is the last wooden trestle bridge left on Highway 1 — built in the 1940s, when steel was going to the war effort, out of the one material this coast has never been short of.

Things we’ve picked up cooking in Albion, for whoever is staying:
- Albion has a small store that’s better stocked than its size suggests — good for the odd thing you’ve run out of. No gas, though; that’s Fort Bragg.
- The Albion River Bridge is the last wooden trestle bridge on Highway 1 — built in the 1940s when steel was going to the war effort.
- Ridge properties have the views and the bigger kitchens; river-mouth places have the quiet and the water access. They’re different holidays.
- Albion Ridge Road is narrow, winding and unlit. Arrive in daylight the first time.

Can you cook several meals across a week-long stay?
That’s a good chunk of our Albion work. We’ll build a plan across the days — a big arrival dinner, a brunch or two, something simple mid-week, a proper send-off — and price it per meal from the rate card. It usually works out better than eating out every night on this stretch of coast.
Do you cook at properties up Albion Ridge?
Regularly. The drive up is no trouble and it’s still inside our radius, so there’s no travel charge. Ridge kitchens tend to be the roomiest around, which opens up plated multi-course service.
What if our property is hard to find?
Send the address and any gate codes with your booking. We’ve been up most of these roads, and we build the drive into our arrival time rather than turning up late and rushed.
