New Year’s Eve Dinner with a Private Chef in Mendocino
New Year's Eve in your Mendocino rental: a late tasting menu paced to midnight, bites when the clock strikes, and a storm outside the window. Nobody drives.
Private Chef Experiences · Mendocino County
New Year’s Eve is a Thursday this year. Spend it somewhere with a fire, big windows and the ocean outside, and let us cook. A long dinner, paced to midnight, in a house nobody has to leave.
A tasting menu, paced to midnight
Most dinners we cook run three or four hours. New Year’s Eve runs on a different clock. We’ll start later, slow the courses down, and plan the evening backward from midnight so the last plate lands with time for a toast. Small, rich courses suit the night: crab if the season’s open, oysters, something with truffles or wild mushrooms, a proper cheese course, and dessert just before the countdown.
Bites when the clock strikes
Midnight is when everyone suddenly wants to eat again. It’s your call how the night ends: we can stay through midnight and serve the late bites ourselves, or leave a spread for after the toast (something salty, something sweet and something hot) and slip out once the kitchen’s clean. Staying past midnight is an add-on we’ll price with you.
The storm-watch New Year
This is El Niño winter, and late December is prime storm season on the coast. A front rolling in off the Pacific, rain against the windows and a table full of people you love is about as good as New Year’s Eve gets. Read our El Niño winter guide for what a wet winter means out here.
Nobody drives
Highway 1 on New Year’s Eve is dark, winding and often wet, and that’s before anyone’s had a glass of anything. Dinner at the house means the night ends by the fire. Bring the bubbles, or ask us and we’ll suggest something from down the road to match the menu.
Kids too
If the kids are up with you, we’ll feed them first and early, then give the grown-ups the long version. Plenty of families do a small midnight in another time zone at nine o’clock and call it a night.
New Year’s on the coast
No public New Year’s Eve parties have been announced on the coast yet. In past years there’s been a dance at the Caspar Community Center and live music at a few places in Fort Bragg, so check closer to the date. For a night that’s yours from the first course to the toast, the house is hard to beat.
- New Year’s Eve daytime: the Skunk Train runs on December 31 (Christmas train from Willits, Pudding Creek Express from Fort Bragg), if you want a morning out before the night in.
- New Year’s Day: California State Parks usually runs First Day Hikes in the Mendocino parks; listings go up in December.
- Whales: gray whales pass the headlands heading south from late November into February. An ocean-view rental at New Year’s is whale watching from the table. (Point Cabrillo Light Station)

Good to know
What does New Year’s Eve cost?
Holiday dates are priced for the holiday: dinner from $275 a person, with most tables landing between $275 and $350, and a $2,500 minimum. It’s a lot of food and a long day in the kitchen, and these are the dates everyone wants. The pricing guide has the full rate card.
How far ahead should we book?
Now. It’s one night a year, and every rental on the coast is full that week.
Can it be just the two of us?
Yes. Two is a perfectly normal booking, and a New Year’s Eve tasting menu for two is one of the best nights we cook.
