Switzer Farm

Twenty-two oceanfront acres at the north end of the coast, let as a complete three-night buyout.

Westport, CA · the far north end of the coast, about 20 minutes above Fort Bragg.

Twenty-two oceanfront acres let as a complete buyout: an 1880s Victorian farmhouse, a garden cottage, lawns, meadows and open headland. You do not book the day. You book the property for three days and three nights, and for that time nobody else is there.

Kitchen reality

Switzer Farm is the most caterer-considerate venue we have found on this coast, and it is not close.

The farmhouse kitchen has genuinely good appliances behind a finish made to look as though it grew there since the 1880s — usable for a group cooking together or for a catered dinner. That alone would be enough.

But there is also a dedicated outdoor catering area beside it: a double sink, ample power, real plumbing, screened off from the lawn by a bank of bushes so the working end of the evening stays invisible to your guests. Someone built that having actually watched caterers work. Almost nowhere else has it.

What it means in practice: a caterer can run a full service without commandeering the house your family is living in that weekend, and without an extension lead crossing the lawn. Guests get a farmhouse; the kitchen gets a kitchen.

What it costs

  • $23,000 for 2026 and $25,000 for 2027, for groups up to 99 guests.
  • That covers exclusive use of all 22 acres for three days and three nights, plus lodging for 20-odd guests across the seven-bedroom farmhouse and the garden cottage.
  • Catering, bar, rentals, photography, florals and planning are all additional — this is a venue-and-lodging price.
  • Bring your own vendors. Couples import caterers from the Bay Area or use Mendocino ones; the choice is genuinely yours.

What we would cook there

Three days on one property is a menu, not a meal. Friday a loose welcome dinner while people arrive from the road. Saturday the wedding, cooked properly because there is somewhere to cook it. Sunday a long brunch nobody has to drive to. We price all of that as one wedding weekend rather than three separate jobs, which at Switzer makes obvious sense.

Being this far north changes the sourcing in a good way. Fort Bragg is twenty minutes down the road, so the fish is genuinely same-day — rockfish and lingcod through the autumn, albacore when the boats find it. The headland does the rest.

What we would not. Very little. The honest constraint here is the budget, not the building.

What to confirm before you book

  • Exactly what is in the indoor kitchen, and whether there is a walk-in or only domestic refrigeration.
  • What the outdoor catering area provides — work surface, cover, lighting after dark.
  • Whether open-fire or outdoor cooking is permitted, and where.
  • Whether they keep a list of caterers who have worked there before.
  • Music and noise end times.
  • Wet-weather backup — it is an exposed headland at the north end of the coast, and weather up there is its own thing.
  • Where the guests who do not fit the 20 beds are staying; Westport is small.
