Willits bookings tend to be private ranches and rural properties rather than vacation rentals, often with plenty of land and a kitchen that was built for a family rather than a party. That suits us; we work outdoors here more than anywhere else in the county, cooking over fire with the dining table set under the sky.
Seabiscuit’s valley
Ridgewood Ranch, just south of town, was Seabiscuit’s home for the last years of his life and where he is buried — an unlikely thing to find in a quiet inland valley, and still a working ranch. Willits sits at the inland end of the Skunk Train line, built to haul redwood out to the coast, and the surrounding country has stayed ranch land rather than vineyard. It is the part of the county that still runs on livestock, and the food follows.

Things we’ve picked up cooking in Willits, for whoever is staying:
- Ridgewood Ranch south of town was Seabiscuit’s home for his last years, and he’s buried there. It’s still a working ranch and runs tours seasonally.

- Dinner from $175 a head, where most tables land $195–245. Brunch, lunch, weddings and tasting menus are all on the full rate card.
- Travel is billed separately. Willits is roughly sixty miles from Mendocino — about an hour and a half — well outside our 15-mile radius — we’ll quote it with your proposal so there’s no surprise on the invoice.

Do you cater ranch weddings?
Yes, and it’s a good part of our Willits work. The wedding itself is from $250 per person, with the rehearsal supper from $215 and the next-morning brunch from $95. Rural sites need real planning around power, water, and shade, and we’ll walk that through well before the date.
Can you cook outdoors for a large group?
It’s what this country is for. Open-fire and tasting-menu service is $275 per person, and additional service staff are $275 per server when the guest count needs them. Fire restrictions get checked for your date as a matter of course.
Is it too far for you to come?
No — we cook inland regularly. It’s outside our 15-mile radius, so travel is quoted with your proposal. For a full wedding weekend it’s a small part of the whole.
