Private Chef in Boonville

Boonville sits in the middle of Anderson Valley, an hour inland from the coast through the redwoods on Highway 128, and it cooks nothing like Mendocino does. The fog stays on the coast; the valley gets real heat, and with it stone fruit, tomatoes that actually taste of something, and the pinot noir and gewürztraminer the valley is known for. When we cook here the menu leans warmer and later — long outdoor tables, food off the fire, dinner that runs into the dark.

We cook where you’re staying

Anderson Valley bookings are farm cottages, vineyard rentals, and group houses taken for a tasting weekend. Many sit on properties with outdoor space begging for a long table and kitchens ranging from beautifully equipped to charmingly rustic. Tell us which you’ve got and we’ll write the menu to it.

The valley that invented its own language

In the 1890s Boonville developed Boontling — a full jargon of over a thousand words, built by locals partly for fun and partly so outsiders couldn’t follow the conversation. A few dozen speakers remain and the odd phrase still surfaces. It says something true about the valley: sixty miles from the coast, over a slow road, Anderson Valley has always been comfortable doing things its own way. The wine came late and the apples came first.

Worth knowing while you’re here

Things we’ve picked up cooking in Boonville, for whoever is staying:

  • The valley runs hot in summer while the coast sits in fog — it can be thirty degrees warmer here than in Mendocino on the same afternoon.
  • Highway 128 from the coast is beautiful and slow. Budget an hour, more behind a log truck, and note that cell service drops out through the redwoods.
  • Boontling, the valley’s invented jargon, is still spoken by a handful of people. Ask an old-timer to ‘harp Boont’ if you want to hear it.
  • Tasting rooms mostly close by five. If you want wine with dinner, buy it during the day.
  • The fairgrounds in Boonville host the county fair and the beer festival — both fill every rental in the valley, so book early around those dates.

Good for

  • Wine-country weddings and rehearsal dinners
  • Winemaker and harvest dinners
  • Long-table dinners outdoors, cooked over fire
  • Group houses and multi-day valley stays

What the valley gives us

  • Stone fruit and tomatoes that ripen properly inland
  • Apples from the valley’s old orchards
  • Lamb and pork from Anderson Valley ranches
  • Coast seafood, brought over with us that morning

What it costs in Boonville

Guide rates, per person, by the meal we’re cooking — every event is quoted individually.

  • Dinner from $175 a head, where most tables land $195–245. Brunch, lunch, weddings and tasting menus are all on the full rate card.
  • Travel is billed separately. Boonville is about an hour from Mendocino over Highway 128, outside our 15-mile radius — we’ll quote it with your proposal so there’s no surprise on the invoice.

Every rate includes menu design, sourcing, all shopping, cooking, service, and full kitchen cleanup. See the full pricing guide.

Good to know

Will you bring seafood over from the coast?

Yes, and it’s one of the better reasons to hire a coastal chef for a valley event. We buy on the coast the morning of and drive it over — a shorter journey than most restaurant fish makes.

Can you cook outdoors at a valley property?

Gladly — the valley’s summer evenings are made for it. The one thing to plan around is fire restrictions, which tighten through late summer; we’ll check the rules for your date and have a version of the menu that works either way.

Do you work with the valley’s wineries and venues?

We cook wherever you’ve booked, and we’re used to working alongside a venue’s own staff and timeline. Send us the property when you inquire and we’ll sort the kitchen logistics directly with them.
