Spring Ranch
A private historic ranch just south of Mendocino, built for a wedding that lasts three days.
Little River, CA · on the coast just south of Mendocino village.
A private historic ranch let as an exclusive buyout — the whole property, for the whole weekend. Guests sleep on site in a Grand Victorian and a converted carriage barn. Of everything on this coast, it is the venue built most deliberately for a wedding that lasts three days rather than one evening.
Why it suits a private chef better than anywhere else
Spring Ranch does not do in-house catering, welcomes third-party caterers at no additional charge, and includes full kitchen access in the package. You choose your caterer, your bar, your planner, your florist. No approved list, no surcharge for bringing your own people, no negotiating for kitchen time around somebody else’s dinner service.
That is unusual and it is worth understanding what it buys you. At most venues the food is shaped by what the venue permits. Here it is shaped only by what you want and what the coast is growing and landing that week — which is the way we would rather work, and frankly the way the food gets better.
The weekend shape
- Around 21 guests sleep on site, across the Grand Victorian and the carriage barn; the wider event is larger, so confirm your numbers with the ranch.
- Exclusive use of the property, so nothing is shared with other guests.
- Because the inner circle stays on site, the weekend naturally becomes several meals rather than one — welcome dinner, the wedding itself, and a long slow brunch before people drive home.
- Premium buyout pricing. Ask the ranch directly; it is quoted per event rather than published.
What we would cook there
This is the full wedding weekend we price as one job. Friday: a welcome dinner, generous and loud, family-style. Saturday: the wedding, cooked properly, with a kitchen behind it. Sunday: brunch for people who were up too late, which is the meal everybody remembers and nobody plans.
With a real kitchen and no vendor restrictions we would build the whole thing around the week’s actual landings and harvest — rockfish and lingcod from Fort Bragg, vegetables from the valley, Anderson Valley wine from twenty minutes inland.
What we would not. Very little, honestly. This is the venue where the constraint is your budget and your imagination rather than the building.
What to confirm before you book
- Full event capacity, as distinct from the 21 who sleep on site.
- What the kitchen contains, and whether there is a walk-in.
- Whether open-fire or outdoor cooking is permitted on the property.
- Music and noise end times.
- Whether they keep a preferred vendor list even though outside vendors are welcome.
- Wet-weather backup for the ceremony and dinner.
